Varaha, one of the world’s largest carbon dioxide removal (CDR) suppliers, has selected Isometric as the carbon registry for its Enhanced Weathering (EW) deployments on smallholder cotton farms in India.
Founded in 2022, Varaha’s approach centres on the potential of smallholder farmers to remove one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The company works with over 100,000 smallholder farmers across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Kenya and is committed to improving farmer incomes and climate resilience through community-based carbon removal.
Under the agreement, Isometric will issue carbon removal credits in accordance with the Isometric Standard and the Enhanced Weathering Protocol. Isometric’s protocol is the most scientifically rigorous on the market and enabled the issuance of the world’s first independently verified EW credits in December 2024. All measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) data—captured by Varaha’s digital MRV framework—will be tracked and managed through Isometric Certify.
Varaha’s EW deployments accelerate the Earth’s natural weathering process by applying finely crushed basalt to agricultural fields. The basalt reacts with carbon dioxide to form stable bicarbonates, which are eventually transported to the ocean by rivers. This process can improve the health of degraded soils—often affected by fertilizer overuse and residue burning—and support increased crop yields.
Madhur Jain, CEO of Varaha, said:
“We’re excited to partner with Isometric to deliver high-quality carbon removal credits. Isometric’s scientific rigor, transparency, and monthly verification will help us deliver on our mission to support smallholder farmers and their communities, all while scaling carbon removal.”
We’re pleased to support Varaha’s mission by issuing rigorous and transparent CDR credits for its EW projects.
