Isometric has launched Ready for CBAM, a service that helps exporters to the European Union prepare their emissions data for verification ahead of the first declarations due under the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). It covers cement, iron and steel, aluminum, fertilizers, hydrogen, and electricity, all six sectors under the mechanism. Global industrials, such as Cementir, are already using the service.
Why verification matters
Under CBAM, EU importers must pay for the carbon emissions embedded in the goods they buy. Those emissions are calculated either from the exporter’s actual figures, checked by an accredited verifier, or from the EU’s default values, set at the exporting country’s average emissions plus a markup. For most goods, this markup rises from 10% in 2026 to 30% by 2028. This means that verification will directly affect how competitive an exporter’s products are in the EU.
EU importers must file their first declarations, covering 2026 imports, by September 30, 2027, meaning exporters have limited time to complete verification before their goods are assessed using default values.
Yet exporters are going into their first CBAM verification with very little guidance on what a good submission looks like, and no way of knowing how long the process will take. A submission with errors may need to go through verification multiple times, so the best way to avoid delays is to get the monitoring plan and emissions report right before they reach the verifier.
How Ready for CBAM works
With Ready for CBAM, Isometric’s carbon accounting experts work with exporters to prepare the monitoring plan and emissions report for each plant. Isometric’s AI-powered platform checks the data as it is uploaded and flags any issues, and the experts then review the full submission against the EU’s rules.
This support also continues through verification itself. Should the verifier raise findings, the same experts who prepared the submission work with the exporter to resolve them.
Alberto Canale, Performance Director at Cementir, said: “CBAM means proving the embodied emissions of every tonne of cement we sell into the EU. Isometric’s platform and team of experts made what would have been a demanding process fast and simple.”
Steel Dynamics, Inc., which already works with Isometric on carbon removal, welcomed the launch.
Jeff Hansen, SVP Environmental Sustainability & Energy at Steel Dynamics, Inc., said: “Steel Dynamics is one of the largest producers of lower-embodied-carbon steel in North America. We appreciate Isometric’s rigorous approach and the structure they bring to helping markets recognize the environmental value of real, measurable and durable decarbonization projects like those we are advancing at Steel Dynamics.”
Ready for CBAM is built on the same platform Isometric uses to certify more than 200 carbon removal and reduction projects around the world.
