Accelerating the path to scalable Enhanced Weathering
Isometric issued the world’s first independently verified Enhanced Weathering (EW) credits for InPlanet in December 2024, marking a milestone for this promising carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathway. EW offers compelling advantages—it’s relatively low cost, has broad geographical applicability, and creates substantial co-benefits like improved soil health, greater agricultural productivity, and rural job creation.
However, quantifying EW today relies heavily on direct measurement, which creates an operational burden for suppliers. Environmental safeguarding also adds another layer of complexity suppliers need to consider when selecting suitable feedstocks.
Real-world deployment data can help answer open scientific questions about how EW processes work under different conditions. By building robust datasets now, we're creating the empirical foundation that will eventually enable model-based approaches, substantially reducing verification costs while increasing the accuracy of carbon removal estimates.
Cascade Climate's ERW Data Quarry stands at the center of this effort, creating a vital repository where anonymized EW project data can be securely shared with academic researchers tackling these fundamental questions.
Standardizing data for scientific progress
Isometric has been working closely with Cascade Climate to develop standardized EW data formats across the entire measurement spectrum—for feedstock, soil, aqueous, and biomass data. This collaboration has involved:
- Creating standardized representations of particle size distribution and mineralogy of feedstocks
- Applying the Quantities, Units, Dimensions, and Types (QUDT) framework to clarify data units
- Developing machine-readable CSV column headers
- Establishing consistent metadata schemas for project documentation
This standardization not only simplifies data aggregation but also enables researchers to compare datasets across different projects with unprecedented ease, accelerating scientific discovery in the EW field.
Seamless integration for suppliers
Since InPlanet's world-first verification, we've significantly enhanced Certify's functionality to accelerate EW verifications, helping suppliers realize revenue more quickly. Now, we've taken this a step further by enabling direct data sharing between Certify and Data Quarry.
The integration means that suppliers can contribute to scientific advancement without data reformatting or additional technical work. Data uploaded to Certify as part of verification can be exported directly to Data Quarry, maintaining data integrity while reducing the administrative burden on suppliers.
As more suppliers share their standardized data through this pathway, we'll collectively build the scientific foundation needed to scale EW to its full potential as a gigatonne-scale carbon removal solution.
If you're an EW project developer already using Certify, you can now share your data with Cascade's ERW Data Quarry directly through the platform. Discover more about EW with Isometric, and get in touch to explore enabling this feature for your projects.
