The United States Department of Energy has made $15 million of federal funding available to “accelerate commercialization of CDR technologies.”
Isometric is part of two out of the four National Laboratory-led teams selected for this funding.
Our collaboration with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) aims to establish readily-applicable foundations for monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) standards across all carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathways, building from the results from each of the four National Laboratory-led projects. The end goal of this project is to create and test a resulting “umbrella MRV framework” that will allow CDR stakeholders to develop MRV protocols by referencing an open-source product of the most up-to-date scientific foundations. This wide-reaching initiative includes partners from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL), CarbonPlan, Carbon Direct and three other industry representatives.
Our collaboration with NREL focuses on developing solutions for MRV challenges for the Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) pathway. This project aims to relieve scientific gaps around understanding of the durability of bio-derived products used for CDR through experiments and MRV framework design. Isometric will help produce best practices and protocols for BiCRS suppliers. LLNL is also a partner on this project—alongside eight BiCRS-focused industry representatives.
